Baileys & Kahlua: Two Little Lives Worth Saving
Sometimes rescue begins with something as simple as noticing.
One evening, our longtime volunteer Sabrina was driving through a rough neighborhood—an area where life can be especially difficult for outdoor cats, and where black cats can be particularly vulnerable. Their lives short lived.
And somehow, in the darkness, she spotted a tiny black kitten. Yes, we cat ladies really can spot a black cat on a black night. 🐈⬛ But this little kitten wasn't just wandering around. She was crying.
When Sabrina got closer, she could see something was terribly wrong. Here eyes were irritated and painful, stinging so badly that this tiny kitten clearly needed help.
Then another kitten appeared. Her sibling. Two little kittens, alone and hungry.
Like any properly prepared cat woman, Sabrina went straight to the emergency supply of cat food she keeps in her trunk. She fed them, and they ate hungrily. But before taking them away, she waited.
Was there a mother cat nearby? Were there more kittens hiding somewhere? Would another cat appear?
None did. Sabrina returned the next day with a trap and safely captured both kittens so they could be taken to the veterinarian.
And That Was Only the Beginning
The little black kitten was named Kahlua, and his sister was named Baileys.
They needed veterinary care, medication, good nutrition, a safe place to recover—and time.
Their veterinary expenses reached approximately $400 with followups, vaccinations, etc.
For the next two months, Bailey and Kahlua were cared for while their little bodies healed and grew stronger. And today? They have a clean bill of health.

The frightened, hungry kittens found struggling outside are now healthy youngsters with an opportunity for the kind of life every animal deserves.
This is what rescue looks like. It isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it happens quietly, late at night, because one person notices a kitten crying and decides not to drive past.
But saying yes to that animal comes with a cost.
